Experiment

Joshua-Bell-Washington-Metro-Station

How do we perceive art?  How do we value art? In case you missed the original, Pulitizer-prize winning article, it’s all here in the Washington Post’s piece by Gene Weingarten.

At Least We’re Alive

“At least we’re alive” is the rough translation of the German/Yiddish phrase used by Lipa Schmelzer in his rendition of the Tokens “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” The rest is, as my grandfather used to say, jargon.

The Best Things So Conservatively

Ray Davies saw us before we were us.  His songs of a lost world, or a world that is wonderful in its decrepitude, are melancholy in the way of the best ‘cheap music’ (to use Noel Coward’s characterization of the same) have a powerful effect on me, especially in these old kinescopes that are the most telling memories of my childhood.

Free Association

Given their popularity throughout the 60s, video of the Association seem scarce.  Here they are in 1967; almost the perfect 60s video.  Great clothes, great cheesy slo-mo film footage, great facial expressions.  Why Windy is in Chicago (at places like the Pickle Barrel in Old Town, Oak Street Beach, Grant Park) is never explained.  The obvious answer makes the video ever richer.

2016

One of the great first lines in any rock song:  “Pack it up, buddy gonna shut you down.”

Given Mayor D’s closing speech (which still puzzles me) and the vote, it’s appropriate.

Del Shannon (Underappreciated)

Too much Brylcreem for the 60s, he got lost in the mix.  Great song
